Is
Yoga a religion? — The roots of yoga are from
India and the word means to "yoke" or
connect one's
divine aspect with one's human aspect. I like to think about it as a way to be whole or integrated. Yoga translates to mean a "unitive discipline or practice". There are many branches
of yoga, postures are are only part of one of the branches. You could do yoga your whole life and never do a yoga posture. In the United States the most common kinds of yoga are:
Hatha, the physical exercises or postures; Raja or meditation;
and Pranayama, the breathwork. Depending on the teacher
or style of yoga, there may be more, or less, spiritual
aspects. At WiseWays we do not use Sanskrit, preach or espouse
any particular theistic tenants. Many WiseWays students find that the center and calming aspects of the work enhances their spiritual
or religious life.--Michele Mangione

Do
I have to be flexible to do yoga? — No,
especially with WiseWays yoga. You will
gain flexibility by practicing yoga.
Each of us has a unique body, some people are
naturally more "bendable",
have a greater range of motion inherent in their skeleton, than others. Even within the same body there
are different degrees of flexibility. At WiseWays the
work is individualized. What is right for one person
may not be right for another person. What you
want is to find the optimum ways for your unique body
to achieve health, balance and vitality.

What is a "hot style" of yoga? And is WiseWays a hot style of yoga? --A hot style of yoga means that the room is heated to 80-90-or more degrees to create an environment similar to southern India. Furthermore hot styles of yoga are very active and athletic. Recommended for those in their 20's or 30's and/or those who are aerobically fit or athletically inclined. WiseWays is not a hot style of yoga, we do not heat our rooms beyond a comfortable temperature and our focus is not on producing sweat as it is in hot styles. We do have an Empower level that is more challenging physically than our other sessions. You may break a sweat, or not, depending on your body. In Empower, as in all our sessions, there is time and attention to the guidance of your body's wisdom and needs. Some days this may mean you, personally, do more physically, while on other days you pace it down. Your body will respond to this approach by becoming strong and fit, while remaining loose and safe.
